Musgrave/Essenwood UIP
Perception Survey

The Musgrave / Essenwood UIP Perception Survey is a local data initiative powered by CityMenderSA and the MEUIP Initiators, designed to capture how residents, businesses, and stakeholders feel about the state of service delivery, safety, and urban management in one of Durban’s most vital mixed-use areas.

This survey forms part of a growing network of CityMenderSA perception studies across South Africa, aimed at giving every community a structured, data-backed voice in shaping how their neighbourhoods are managed and maintained.

Purpose and Vision

Musgrave and Essenwood are the heart of Durban’s upper Berea, diverse, vibrant, and deeply rooted in community pride. But like many established suburbs, they face ongoing challenges: ageing infrastructure, safety concerns, inconsistent service delivery, and public space management.

The goal of this survey is to collect honest, measurable community feedback that helps identify both strengths and areas that need improvement.

By turning perception into data, CityMenderSA empowers the newly pending Musgrave / Essenwood Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP) to work more strategically with the municipality and private partners to improve how the area functions day to day.

The survey focuses on key categories such as:

  • 🛣️ Infrastructure and Service Delivery — roads, streetlights, waste collection, water, and electricity reliability.

  • 🛡️ Safety and Security — visibility of patrols, response times, and overall sense of safety.

  • 🌿 Cleanliness and Public Spaces — maintenance of parks, pavements, and street verges.

  • 💡 Community Satisfaction and Engagement — how residents feel about the quality of life and the role of the UIP.

Data Integration and Impact

Responses are collected and securely analysed through CityMenderSA’s analytics dashboard, giving the MEUIP access to clear, real-time visual data on how the community perceives its surroundings.

The information will guide priorities, resource allocation, and long-term urban improvement plans, ensuring decisions are made with the people, not just for them.

Community Collaboration

This initiative is built on partnership between residents, businesses, and civic organisations.
By participating, each person contributes to a shared vision: a cleaner, safer, and more connected Musgrave and Essenwood.

Your input helps shape the neighbourhood we all call home, one where community data drives meaningful change.
