Report Waste and Sanitation Issues

🚮 Report a Sanitation or Waste Issue

Reporting a waste and sanitation issue is quick and easy:

  1. Go to our interactive map.

  2. Drop a pin on the map where the issue is occurring

  3. Select “Waste and Sanitation” from the list of categories

  4. Choose a specific type, such as:

    • Illegal dumping

    • Blocked or damaged storm drain

    • Sewerage leak or overflow

  5. Describe the issue, including how long it’s been a problem and any health/safety concerns

  6. Add your municipal reference number (we strongly suggest you get one, as it will help officials track your issue more precisely)

  7. Submit and get your CityMenderSA reference number

  8. Update or follow up anytime to track progress

Your report helps protect both public health and the environment.

You now have a record of the problem that you can track, share, and present to your local ward councillor, Ratepayer Association, or local government.

🔹 Why Reporting Sanitation & Waste Issues Matters

Poor sanitation and unmanaged waste are not just unpleasant, they’re dangerous.
These issues can lead to:

  • Public health hazards, including disease outbreaks

  • Blocked stormwater drains, increasing flood risks

  • Polluted rivers and green spaces

  • Pest infestations (rats, mosquitoes, flies)

  • Decreased property values and general urban decay

Reporting these issues helps ensure cleaner, safer, and healthier communities, especially in densely populated areas and near schools or food vendors.

🔹 Why the Data Is Important

Sanitation problems are often recurring and systemic, not isolated. The data collected on CityMenderSA allows communities and municipal stakeholders to:

  • Identify illegal dumping hotspots

  • Track repeat sewerage failures or broken infrastructure

  • Monitor response times and service quality

  • Build accountability reports for public forums and ward meetings

  • Support environmental advocacy with visible evidence

With enough data, we move from complaint to action, with real insight into where, how, and why our sanitation systems are failing.
