Gauteng Perception Survey

The Gauteng Provincial Perception Survey is one of CityMenderSA’s most ambitious regional studies, a data-driven initiative aimed at understanding how residents across the province experience and perceive service delivery, infrastructure management, safety, and environmental sustainability in their local municipalities.

Gauteng, being the economic hub of South Africa, faces complex urban challenges, from high-density development and rapid population growth to issues of waste management, public safety, transport, and governance efficiency. This survey provides a structured platform for residents, business owners, and community organisations to share their lived experiences and priorities, helping to shape evidence-based solutions that reflect the realities on the ground.

Purpose and Vision

The survey’s primary goal is to gather quantitative and qualitative insights from residents across cities such as Johannesburg, Tshwane, and Ekurhuleni, as well as surrounding municipal areas. The data collected will:

  • Measure public confidence in key municipal services, including water, electricity, waste management, and road maintenance.

  • Evaluate perceptions of safety, by-law enforcement, and urban management.

  • Assess public sentiment on environmental protection and sustainability efforts, including illegal dumping control, park maintenance, and urban greening.

  • Identify priority intervention zones based on aggregated community feedback and geospatial patterns of concern.

  • Strengthen collaboration between communities, ward councillors, and municipalities through transparent, data-backed reporting.

Data Integration and Impact

All responses are securely collected and visualised through CityMenderSA’s advanced analytics dashboard, enabling both residents and stakeholders to track emerging trends, strengths, and service gaps in real time.

🔔 The Gauteng Analytics Dashboard will go live on 24 October 2025, providing open access to provincial heatmaps, sentiment summaries, and data comparisons. This will mark a significant milestone for community-driven transparency, giving everyone the ability to view and interpret the same public data that informs decision-making.

The aggregated results will contribute to the Gauteng Provincial Perception Report, a detailed publication aimed at municipal planners, community forums, and civic organisations to support sustainable development and responsive governance.

Building a Smarter, More Responsive Gauteng

The Gauteng Provincial Perception Survey represents the next step in CityMenderSA’s broader mission: to use technology, analytics, and community input to rebuild trust between residents and government. Each submission is a data point with purpose, a step toward smarter, safer, and more inclusive urban spaces.
